11- CHAPTER ELEVEN
The day had passed too quickly. Rose had been unsuccessful in negotiating her own presence in New Orleans, but grudgingly agreed to give Lily and Olivia a chance on their own. Once again, they began saying their goodbyes, but this time it was at Kentucky Dam Airport. Rose had chartered a private plane for their return trip to New Orleans. There would be no flying commercial or driving, not to mention it allowed the visit to last a bit longer since they didnât have to leave for Nashville. Lily appreciated every extra second she could spend with her son and her loved ones.
As she boarded the plane, Lily took one last look back at her son, who was undoubtedly reading her mind. She tried to project thoughts of a successful mission, of coming back home to him, returning to Ohio and spending eternity with each of them happy and safe. She hoped her doubts didnât creep into what he could feel.
Olivia patted her on the shoulder, as though she understood Lilyâs thoughts as well as Keaton did, and encouraged her to continue on to the plane. What they were about to attempt had to be done. They had to be successful. Everyone she loved, as well as the entire population of her state, depended on her.
Lily steeled her nerves and sat in a seat next to the window. She gazed out at the people she loved most in the world. Her son, her aunt, Bero, Burchard, and Mathias. Only Valentine was missing and he was doing everything he could to be the man she had once loved. For everything each of them had done for her, she would do this for them. She would kill Nicholas. She would kill every vampire in New Orleans, if she needed to. If it took a bloodbath to keep her family safe, that was what sheâd give them. It wouldnât be the first time Lily had blood on her hands, and it probably wouldnât be the last...assuming she lived through it.
***
The plane ride had been peaceful. Lily and Olivia had gone over every possible scenario they could imagine from the time they would land until the time when Lily was finally able to take Nicholasâ head. Only one detail had changed in their initial plan, one major snag that hadnât been considered until the brilliant little Olivia had addressed it.
Whenever a head of state was killed, the vampire who murdered him or her then inherited that role. Lilyâd had no idea, and Rose had never brought it up either. Of course, Lily was well aware of the reason Rose hadnât mentioned it. Her aunt would love to see Lily sitting on the throne of Louisiana. Rose was the leader of Ohio, her husband ran Pennsylvania, and with Lily as the commander of Louisiana, their family would have unlimited power. What most vampires would never consider was the fact Lily didnât want the job. Her ambitions only went as far as taking care of her family and finding a reasonable place for herself in vampire society.
